Cleary, B. (1983).  Dear Mr. Henshaw.  NY: Morrow.
Leigh Boots starts as a second grader when he starts writing letters to Mr. Henshaw, his favorite author.  As Leigh continues to write his letters his life also changes drastically making him feel insecure and feeling he is not noticed.

Beverly Clearly created a timeless book for children to identify with the character that is going through many chances in his life.  Leigh Botts, the protagonist lives with his parents in California.  In second grade Leigh is giving the assignment to write a letter to his favorite author Mr. Henshaw.  At first he was a bit hesitant, but after his initial letter he continued to write to Mr. Henshaw until he was in 6th.  At first the writings where in letter form it letter changed to a diary entry.  In these letters Leigh would express many of his feelings dealing with his parents’ divorce, moving to a place, and feeling he did not fit in.
