A calico cat is pregnant and looking for place to have her kittens. She hears a noise which she follows and leads her to Ranger, a hound that is injured and chained. Ranger lives underneath a house in the bayou. Calico cat goes where Ranger is living and has her kittens. There Ranger and calico cat develop a bond making them into an usual family.
Oddly, the friendship between a cat and a dog is the
center of this story. A calico cat
befriends a hound name Ranger in the bayou.
The animals interact as if they were family and care for each other
where it is safe, in the underneath of a house.
There the calico cat is safe to deliver and raise her kittens, Sabine
and Puck. Appelt use of an unlikely
friendship between a cat and a dog can me relatable to many readers that do not
have the customary family.
