Melody has cerebral palsy but that does not stop her from overcoming many obstacles. Melody proofs that she is strong and with her will to prove she is intelligent like her normal classmates. As she journeys through life she also discovers that she in not the only one with a disability.
Sharon Draper writes a story to make the reader realize
that people with disabilities also have a voice. Draper presents Melody, the main character of
the story not describing her as disabled.
Melody is born with cerebral palsy.
She is not able to communicate in any way with her love ones. Until she is given a device that helps people
with disabilities talk. Melody’s dream
comes true, she was able to communicate.
She was finally able to express herself and speak demonstrating all the
knowledge she had bottled up. As Melody
interacts in a normal classroom, she realizes that everyone has a disability of
their own. A great story of
determination and understanding of people that are not like yourself.
