David is autistic and needs constant reminders on what is appropriate to do in public. Catherine makes rules for her brother David. As the story evolves Catherine too tries to set rules for her own life. She later realized that she needs to let go of the rules she has set for herself in order to overcome her own insecurities.
Cynthia Lord writes a touching and personal story of
dealing with a family member with autism.
Catherine, the main character has a younger brother, David who is
autistic. She wants to control his
brother’s impulses by setting rules for any situation. Say excuse me when you
sneeze, and flush the toilet. As the
story progresses she befriends to very diverse persons. Jason a boy with a disability that has him in
a wheelchair and that she meets in occupational therapy, and Kristi a very
popular and fashionable girl from school.
Catherine has to choose her true friend between Jason and Kristi. It is only when she comes to realize that she
cannot control everything around her that she matures. She learns that as much as she loves her
brother she needs to let go of all the rules she set for him and let go of her
own insecurities.
