The invention of Hugo Cabret

Selznick, B. (2007). The invention of Hugo Cabret. NY: Scholastic.

Hugo an orphan who is left to the care of his uncle.  The uncle is an alcoholic that takes no responsibility of Hugo.  He disappears leaving Hugo to live in the train station.  In the train station Hugo takes care of the clocks and an automaton he wants to repair.  The automaton needs a particular key to work and in his adventures through the train station he finds the key to make the automaton work.  The  key also unlocks many adventure for Hugo.

Not quite a novel, a picture book, nor a graphic novel.  This book stands on its own in style and presentation.  The magical world created by Selznick is set in Paris.  His illustrations takes us where the characters are living.  The vivid experiences the characters go through and their outcome give the readers a sprinkle of magical touch.
