We are the ship

Nelson, K. (2008). We are the ship. NY: Hyperion.

Illustrations and conversational text demonstrating the story of the Negro League Baseball.  This books highlights the greatest moments for African Americans in baseball.

Kadir Nelson wanted to make his book about the Negro League Baseball as authentic as possible.  The title comes from a quote from Rube Foster, the founder of the Negro Leagues, “We are the ship; all else the sea”.  Nelson also interviewed players from the league and studied the history of the league for authenticity.  His illustrations are seen as portraits.  The attention to detail in the players uniforms and movements are astonishing.  This book celebrates the league and its players not the hardships they went through.  Kadir only focus on the positive; the perseverance and dedication of the players in the league.
