The Watson family are from Michigan, where segregation is not in place like in the south. When the family goes to Birmingham, Alabama to visit grandma Sands the children that have never been expose to segregation or racism are shocked at the treatment they receive. 1963, right in the center of the Civil Rights movement the Watson’s visit Grandma Sands in Birmingham, Alabama. Grandma Sands had assured them that everything was calm around her. The Watson’s live in Michigan and the children had not been expose to racism or violence. When the Watson’s arrived in Birmingham, it seemed the violence had accompanied them. This was very troubling to the children, but in particular to Kenny. Kenny was impacted by his near death experience in the Wool Pool and the bombing at the Baptist church.
